1)(1-5 points) Choose 2 famous mathematicians (if you are unsure they fall into this category, please see me) and create a poster that compares them. Your poster must have the following:
Date and location of birth
Date of Death
What they are famous for discovering. (5 complete sentences for each mathematician)
Image of the mathematician
The more creative you get with the poster, the more points it is worth!
2) (1-10 points) Choose a famous math problem from the list below. Write a 2-3 page paper about the problem. Your paper should include its origin, mathematicians who have tried to solve the problem, and who solved it (if it has been solved)
4-Color Map Problem
Fermat's Last Theorem
Collatz Conjecture
The moving couch problem
If you are caught plagiarizing, you will not only be awarded zero points, you will lose all chances at extra credit for the rest of year. This is in addition to the school's plagiarism policies.
3) (1-5 points) Create an abacus (if you don't know what it is, look it up)
Create an abacus out of anything you see fit. The more creative you are, the more points you will receive)
4) (1-10 points) Log into your Khan Academy and complete one whole section in your specific class. You can do this up to 3 times (you will receive 3 points the first time, 2 the second and 1 the third). If you choose to do a class ABOVE yours, more points will be considered.
*NOTE: You must let me know which section your are working on BEFORE you start so I know you are starting at 0%
5) (1-5 points) Create 5 puzzles that are math related. You can choose from the following or think of your own:
Number crossword (something similar to this, must have at least 25 clues and an answer key)
Math related word-search (must have 25 words to find and an answer key)
Create an actual puzzle with a math related picture ( should be done on card stock paper)
6) (1-10 points)Present a lesson to the class. This lesson must be something they may not have seen (meaning you can't teach them the slope intercept formula, if they have already learned it). This must be done on an "off" day, meaning no regular lecture is planned
7) (1-10) Write and sing a math song! This can be completely original or a parody of another song. More points will be considered if you play your own instrument. The more verses the better!
*It should be noted that these should NOT be relied on save your grade. More than likely, if
you need to do extra credit in order to not fail your class, you have chosen not do the credit that
was originally assigned to you. If this is the case, there will need to be a meeting between you,
your parents/guardian, and myself to discuss how we can change this in the future.
