One of the most basic ideas in all of algebra is the concept of a line, aka a Linear Function.  We can determine many real world applications by

 simple investigating a straight line.  Because a straight line will always grow, or decay, at a constant rate we can use its properties to make 

predictions about certain events.  For example, we can predict how fast bamboo will grow, or how long it takes a high speed train to reach its
