Oscar Mayer opened a small butcher shop in 1883. His business grew and by the 1890s he was selling meats out of horse-drawn carts in the Chicago area. He was the first to "brand" his products. Most butchers sold their goods without labels. This prompted customers to ask for Oscar Meyer sausages, cold cuts, and hot dogs by name. The distinctive "Yellow Band" stood for quality and honesty in the production of meat products. By the time of Mayer's death in 1955 the company employed more than 8000 people and enjoyed annual sales of $225 million.

In 1981 Oscar Mayer was bought by General foods Corporation. The company counter the health-conscious public's concern about the consumption of fatty meats with a new line of low fat and low sodium products. The creation of Lunchables in 1988 secured Oscar Mayer's place in American lunchboxes.
