Dole is a famous food brand that is know for their cans of pineapples. Although pineapples are their largest product sold, they also sell canned fruit, dried fruit, fruit bowls, beverages, frozen treats, and frozen fruit. So how did their business come about?
In 1851, two men by the names of Samuel Northrup and Amos Star Cooke, decided to sell sugar from Hawaii. Their company name would be called Castle and Cooke. Later on their business would intercede between companies and land owners and become a retail development company.
At the same time, a man by the name of James Dole decided to invest in the pineapple industry. James Drummond Dole was born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 27, 1877. He moved to Hawaii and purchased sixty acres of land north of Honolulu, starting his pineapple plantations. His business, The Hawaiian Pineapple Company, continued to grow beyond Hawaii's premises. At this time Dole's employee, Henry Ginaca, invented a machine to cut pineapples into thin cylinders. Dole used this machine to benefit the company's growth. He also convinced the American Can Company to build a cannery next to Dole's pineapple factory to minimalize production costs.
During the Great Depression, Dole failed at sustaining their income and budget. Sales were declining along with the allowance to advertise. When Dole tried selling a new product, pineapple juice, it failed to gain a large amount of the sales. Due to the economy's health, The Hawaiian Pineapple Company was not thriving in general. At the same time, Castle and Cooke bought Dole's business. In 1933 they proceeded to make its name Dole.
Even after James' death on May 20, 1958, from the 1930s to current day, Dole has continued to expand their products from different variations of a fruit to adding more fruits and vegetables as products. In the 1990s they continued to advertise for Dole by creating a slogan: "How'd You Do Your Dole Today?" This encouraged the nation to eat vegetables and fruits daily. By this time Dole was the leading market share in America, Mexico, and Japan. Today Dole has sold to over ninety countries and holds one of the top positions within its industry.
