Had five children: William, Mary, James Jr., Elizabeth, and Ernest
James, only fourteen years old, and his brothers left Nantucket because of a family tragedy. They arrived in California with hopes of finding gold. James did not go hunt for gold. Instead, he went to work for William H. Bovee at his coffee company. In 1859, after working only nine years, James was a full partner and started buying shares. Because of the Civil War, the economy collapsed and the coffee company went bankrupt. James found creditors to pay the company's debt and renamed it J.A. Folger and Co.
1865 Company gets a new name

1880 A new standard for coffee is set when stations are set called "cup tasting" people get to taste and smell the coffee before they buy it. This is a new thing that has never been done.
1900 Folgers spreads to the Eastern coast and starts giving samples to store customers.
1906 Great Earthquake hits San Francisco, and Folgers servers free coffee.
1949 Folgers has an iced coffee.
Folgers moves the main plant to New Orleans because of the war and it becomes the biggest plant in the nation.
Procotor and Gamble buy Folgers and it becomes the #1 coffee brand in the United States
1984 - "The best part of waking up" jingle is launched.
