EPS has adopted the FLASH lessons for grades 4-12 for comprehensive sexual health education. FLASH is a widely used sexual health education curriculum developed by Public Health – Seattle & King County. The goals of the FLASH curriculum are to prevent unintended teen pregnancy, STDs, and sexual violence while increasing family communication about relationships and sexual health and increasing knowledge of sexual health topics. FLASH Overview Video.
Washington state law requires that parents and guardians be notified at least one month before the curriculum will be taught to their student and that parents and guardians are given the opportunity to review the materials that will be used. EPS has multiple evening parent preview sessions for elementary and middle school parents over the year. For high school, parents may request a preview from the classroom teacher. Please check with your school for details. Some materials may only be viewed at the school site due to copyright laws.
Parents and guardians always have the right to have their child excused from participating in the sexual health lessons or HIV/AIDS education. However, parents are encouraged to review the materials prior to requesting an opt out form for their student.
