At EPS we provide inclusive comprehensive sexual health education that is age-appropriate, scientifically accurate, affirms the identities of all students, and supports them in making healthy choices that serve them for a lifetime.
We believe that young people should have the knowledge and skills necessary to:
- develop a healthy sense of self,
- know and understand their rights,
- build healthy relationships,
- protect themselves from sexual violence, unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection.
Inclusive sexual health education that addresses the varied needs of each student can foster safe and supportive school environments that promote respect and empathy both in the classroom, and in the community, so that students can live fully-empowered lives.
Overview
EPS has adopted the FLASH lessons for grades 4-12 for comprehensive sexual health education. FLASH is a widely used sexual health education curriculum developed by Public Health – Seattle & King County. The goals of the FLASH curriculum are to prevent unintended teen pregnancy, STDs, and sexual violence while increasing family communication about relationships and sexual health and increasing knowledge of sexual health topics. Can parents preview the lessons and materials?
Washington state law requires that parents and guardians be notified at least one month before the curriculum will be taught to their student and that parents and guardians are given the opportunity to review the materials that will be used. For high school, parents may request a preview from the classroom teacher. Please check with your school for details. Some materials may only be viewed at the school site due to copyright laws.
Parents and guardians always have the right to have their child excused from participating in the sexual health lessons or HIV/AIDS education. However, parents are encouraged to review the materials prior to requesting an opt out form for their student.
