See science everywhere. Take opportunities to ask "What would happen if …?" questions or present brainteasers to encourage children to be inquisitive and seek out answers. Ask students what they notice and what they wonder about something in the world around them. Children need to know that science isn't just a subject, but it is a way of understanding the world around us.
Lead family discussions on science-related topics. Have discussions about news stories that are science based, like space shuttle missions, severe weather conditions, or new medical breakthroughs. Bring up the topics your student is learning about at their grade level. Movies and TV shows with science-related storylines are also great topics for discussion.
Do science together. Simple investigations done together in the home can bolster what your child is learning in the classroom. Show excitement for science. Science is all about problem-solving and figuring things out together.
Connect with education sites in our area: Columbia Spring, zoos, museums, aquariums and many other community organizations have opportunities for children to engage in science.
