American Sign Language

Are you interested in learning another language that you can use in your daily life? In the American Sign Language program you will learn language and communication skills necessary to communicate in a variety of settings. Completing up to four years in the American Sign Language program prepares you to move into a two- or four-year interpreter training program, and into a career as a Sign Language Interpreter.

Areas of Study

Sign Language Interpreting

Become proficient in the language through a 2- or 4-year interpreter training programs. Many interpreters choose to focus in a given area to master the language such as medical, legal and educational interpreting. Other careers in this area include teaching, audiology, speech pathologist, deaf education, and social work for the deaf.

Recommended Classes: American Sign Language 1A-1B, 2A-2B, 3A-3B, 4A-4B

Dual Credit and Graduation Requirements

    • All classes provide CTE/Occupational Education credit, or elective or personal pathway credit.

    • Two years of ASL meets University World Language requirement.

    • ASL 2A-2B: 5 credits for each year with Lower Columbia College for ASL 121 and ASL 122

Student Leadership Organizations

Student leadership organizations provide students co-curricular opportunities to apply what they learn, develop practical skills, compete, socialize, and become leaders.
