Computer logins

This relates to workstations being used in rooms 36, 131, 132 and 8a. It explains how the you can change you password by yourself. There is no need to contact the system administrator.

Procedure

1. Login to a workstation in any of the areas indicated above using your own username and the regular password.

2. Once logged in move the mouse pointer to an open area near the centre of the screen.

3. Click the right mouse button.

4. On the sub-menu displayed select the “Open Terminal” option.

5. In the terminal window type the command verb “xpass” (without the quotes) and press <Enter>.

6. For technical reasons you have to type your old password twice so when prompted type your old password and press <Enter>. When prompted again type your old password once more and press <Enter>.

7. If you have entered your old password correctly you will be prompted for a new Unix password. Type your new password and press <Enter). Remember to make the password long enough to satisfy security rules; use letters, digits and special characters to enhance security. You will be prompted to key your new password again, do so and then press <Enter>. If your new passwords do not match the password change will be rejected.

8. If you have done everything correctly you will see “Password updated successfully”. Congratulations.

9. If you make a mistake read the error message carefully and respond accordingly. You may need to start again at step 5.

Notes The system administrator cannot find out your password if you forget it, he can, however, change your password once more. You may be requested to confirm your identity before a password can be changed.

This procedure does not change any other password, for example your school E-mail password.
