What is WorkAbility 1?
WorkAbility I is a comprehensive program in California that supports students with disabilities in transitioning from school to employment.
WorkAbility I provides comprehensive training, employment placement, and follow-up services for middle and high school students with disabilities who are transitioning from school to work, independent living, and post-secondary education. It is funded and administered by the California Department of Education
WorkAbility I offers students:
Career awareness activities
Career exploration opportunities
Job shadowing experiences
Paid and non-paid work experience placements
Ongoing support and guidance
Eligibility and Scope:
Serves special education students ages 16-22 with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
Operates in 237 local education agencies across 55 California counties
The program aims to:
Promote career awareness and exploration while students complete their secondary education
Help students obtain marketable job skills for success in the modern labor market
Facilitate successful student transition to employment, lifelong learning, and quality of life

WorkAbility 1 partners with local employers to provide work experience opportunities for students with disabilities. This allows students to prove themselves in competitive integrated employment settings
WorkAbility I has received national recognition as one of the ten best transition programs of its type in the United States, known for successfully matching young adults with disabilities with employers who need workers.
