Audience:  Literacy Educators (primarily K-3)


Prerequisite: Participants have independently purchased LETRS Online Course and Print Participant Book for Units 1-4 from Lexia (previously Voyager Sopris) at 800.547.6747 or visit https://www.voyagersopris.com/professional-development/letrs/letrs-k-12. 


In Unit 4, we will focus on understanding “Advanced Decoding, Spelling, and Word Recognition.”  

A cohort of educators will embark on an in-depth professional development in the Science of Reading to support all learners.  Participating in this cohort will increase their knowledge of tools used to assess and teach language and literacy skills to every student.  This learning supports any curriculum as it is intended to bridge educators' deep understanding of literacy with strategies that are evidence-based to support learning. 

Participants will complete the online learning units/sessions between each Face to Face training (a pacing guide will be provided).

5/2/24 - NON VIOLENT CRISIS TRAINING - 3RD EDITION

MAY 2, 2024 | 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM


This event is met for school personnel who want to work on verbal de-escalation strategies and focus on person-centered approaches to de-escalating students. There are some basic physical holds, but only level 1 that all can be trained in. 

CPI certification for Edition 3 blended (the newest and most up-to-date) requires an online portion before the in-person training. This online portion will be emailed the week before the training to give you time to complete it. (If you need more time before this, please email Danielle Holztrager-holztrger@esclc.org).

5/3/24 - roundtable for transitioning students with disabilities from hs to lccc (SSTR2) 

MAY 3, 2024 | 1:00 - 3:00 pm


This in-person meeting will be for Transition Coordinators, high school Intervention Specialist, high school counselors, Accessibility Services Providers, and College2Careers (OOD) to:

* Meet new LCCC staff and Providers

* Highlight the support students can receive through College2Careers

* Hear from a student panel—what has worked, what can we improve upon

* New referral process for connecting students who plan to attend LCCC with Accessibility Services

* Q&A


At the end of this session, attendees will understand the process to enroll a student with a disability into LCCC to get their best/supported first year of college.

OCTOBER 5

DAY 1: Multi-Tiered Systems of Support: Leadership

Delve into the Why and the What of MTSS. Evaluate current MTSS practices and use the results of the evaluation to identify the changes that need to occur and the people that need to be involved in the process in order to get the results your district needs. Develop an understanding of the MTSS teams’ role(s) and responsibility at each tier.  Identify the MTSS team tier 1 norms, structures and processes that need to be in place.


JANUARY 11

DAY 2: Multi-Tiered Systems of Support: Building Competency

Suggested Team: Superintendents, Assistant Superintendent, Pupil Services/Sped Director, Curriculum Director, Principals and MTSS team

We will deepen our understanding of MTSS while building district competency.


MARCH 5

DAY 3: Multi-Tiered Systems of Support: Building Implementation

Identify the academic and behavioral expectations for the students in your district. Determine the method for referral and how the placement will happen. Evaluate current interventions and identify others that could be used.

Evaluate the implementation of MTSS, the processes in place and the success of the process at each level.

5/10/24 - lorain cares summit

MAY 10, 2024 | 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM  

Join us for our 2nd annual Lorain Cares Summit with two-time TEDx Speaker, Author, and CEO & Founder of KiMISTRY, LLC, Kimberly Brazwell, as the keynote speaker in the morning session!

This training will focus on reflection and regulation practices in response to stress, trauma, and restoration in working in learning spaces. Participants will gain knowledge and practice co-creation of safe(r) and brave(r) spaces.


The afternoon will consist of 7 types of rest workshops facilitated by the members of the Lorain Cares team.

These breakout sessions will allow participants to choose three rest experiences they would like to attend:

Join us for our first-ever immersive, student-centered workshop where students will have the opportunity to see high school math concepts in action, answering the question “When am I ever going to use this?”


As a participating teacher, you will have the opportunity to choose up to 4 students to join you at AJ Rose Manufacturing to collaborate with other high school students on a math quest and engage in hands-on activities to apply math concepts to manufacturing operations.


*Maximum of 5 teachers, bringing 4 students each. If maximum number of students isn't reached by 4/1, we will open up more spots to interested teachers to bringing more than 4 students each.

The Early Childhood Forum meetings will include topics and resources of critical interest to programs including Preschool special education, professional development opportunities, and Step Up to Quality/licensing updates. 5/17/24 - literacy coaches lounge

This network is an opportunity for literacy coaches to share ideas with one another around the planning and implementation of the coaching process for your school/district, to share evidence-based strategies, and to gain ideas or support from one another.  During these network meetings, we will also facilitate a book study (Literacy Coaching in the Secondary Grades: Helping Teachers Meet the Needs of All Students, 1st Edition by: Jade Wexler, Elizabeth Swanson, and Alexandra Shelton)  throughout the year at each meeting (Participants are required to purchase their own text).  These times will also be used to update you on guidance from Ohio’s Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement, Ohio’s Dyslexia Guidebook, and any other relevant updates in law related to or in support of literacy.

The network will meet every other month in person.  Network discussions from 8:30-11:30 and 12:30-3:30 will be collaboration time with room available and support from ESC Literacy Consultants/Specialists.

Erica Kaufmann, C-SLDI, and Olivia Weisman, CALT, will facilitate this network opportunity for individuals certified in structured literacy.  The network will allow particpants from neighboring districts to gain ideas from one another to support the MTSS process as well as implementation of HB 436 and Ohio’s Dyslexia Guidebook.  Participants will also hear relevant updates on law related to or in support of literacy.

5/24/24 - REAL WORLD APPLICATIONS IN ACTION EDUCATOR WORKSHOP

Target Audience:  High School Science Educators 


Have you ever had a student ask, “When am I EVER going to use this?  Join us for a hands-on workshop where we visit local businesses to see high school science concepts in action, answering the question “When am I ever going to use this?”


As a participant, you will collaborate with other high school science teachers as you visit the Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital and the French Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.


During the tours, you will hear from employees as they share how they use science.  Hands on activities will be provided that demonstrate the concepts you will see on the tour.  We will provide you with sample activities and in some cases a manipulative to take back to your school as you replicate the activities to your students.
