8/6/24 -empowering mathematics leadership through student centered practices

8:30 AM - 3:30 PM

Target Audience:  District staff, building leadership, and/or instructional coaches

As part of the High Quality Instructional Materials in Math Initiative, this session is grant funded and free to district staff, building leadership, and/or instructional coaches.  Participants will also receive a free manipulative kit.

The goal of this session is to build capacity through district leadership and to explore how the HQIM Selection and Implementation Process can be used as an entry point to expanding access to professional learning for educators on research and evidence based practices.

Participants will learn key math indicators to use when evaluating curriculum, how to develop effective coaching cycles or a progression of professional development opportunities to support student centered practices within the indicators, and work towards developing an exemplar walkthrough tool to use for their districts.

9/5/24 - TRANSFORMING MATH EDUCATION THROUGH STUDENT-CENTERED LEARNING

8:30 AM - 3:30 PM

Target Audience:  Math Teachers

As part of the High Quality Instructional Materials in Math Initiative, this session is grant funded and free to K-12 math teachers.  Participants will also receive a free manipulative kit.

Student-Centered Math offers educators a new and engaging way to approach their instruction and provides a shift in instruction that allows students to do the thinking while engaging in mathematical application and communication to increase their ability to reason and problem solve.

Participants will learn about the integration of NCTM’s Effective Teaching Practices, Standards for Mathematical Practice, and Building Thinking Classrooms to build the foundation of a student centered math classroom.  We will be learning routines and protocols specifically for mathematical discourse, modeling in mathematics, and problem solving and reasoning.  Participants will be developing resources to use for immediate implementation.

9/23/24 - book study: figuring out fluency in mathematics

ATTEND ALL DATES: SEPT 23 | OCT 7 | OCT 21 | NOV 4

3:30 - 5:00 PM

Target Audience:  K-8 Math Teachers

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Principles to Actions (2014) states that effective teaching builds fluency with procedures on a foundation of conceptual understanding so that students become skillful in using these procedures flexibly as they solve contextual problems. This implies that fluency in mathematics goes beyond using basic facts or implementing algorithms. Real fluency involves understanding strategies necessary to becoming flexible, accurate and efficient problem solvers.

In this book study, participants will learn how to build a strong foundation for procedural fluency, Seven Significant Strategies, the role of automaticity in the strategies and how to provide quality fluency practice to assess beyond accuracy.

The Figuring Out Fluency books are grant funded and will be provided to all participants to use for this book study. Please see below for dates and chapters that will be discussed on each date.

September 23: Chapters 1 and 2

October 7: Chapter 3

October 21: Chapters 4 and 5

November 4: Chapters 7
