Maths

For part of this block of learning, we have been learning about fractions. In particular finding equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions and showing fractions on a number line. P5/6 enjoyed playing roll a fraction and creating their own fraction number lines using chalk board pens while writing on the table! Some of us even challenged ourselves to show the fractions in their simplest form on our number lines.

Writing

P5/6 have been learning how to use ellipses, setting descriptions, exciting synonyms, clues to intregue the reader and short, sharp sentences. This is all to create a feeling of tension and suspense in their short stories. Naturally, we have been creating some spooky stories with Halloween themes which have been thoroughly giving everyone the creeps! We have loved it and have taken part with great enthusiasm! We also spent some time studying how JK Rowling writes effective setting descriptions to interest the reader. We had great fun creating our own magical settings and exploring how to use personification and alliteration.

Inventors and inventions

P5/6 have chosen to learn about this as their context for learning this month. We have been learning to use digital technologies to enhance and display our learning. We researched an invention or inventor of our choice in pairs and used Sway or PowerPoint to present what we have learned to the class. P5/6 learned about everything from the first bicycle, to Marie Curie and Elon Musk! Such a wealth of incredible and impressive learning took place.

We also managed to create some wonderful posters about some Scottish inventors such as John Logie Baird and Sir Alexander Fleming.

Works of art

We loved using recycled jars (a big thank you to everyone who managed to bring one in!) to create our own Halloween themed lanterns.

We enjoyed exploring a range of techniques while using the oil pastels to create some wonderful pumpkin pictures too!

We have been continuing learning about techniques within sketching to explore how to effectively draw facial features. Well done everyone!

Reading for enjoyment

As a class, we love reading for enjoyment. Each Wednesday afternoon we are able to spend time in the school library choosing a book to borrow. This can be taken home and exchanged the following week, or on a later week depending on how quick a reader we are and how long the book is! Please remember your library book each Wednesday.
