September 2023

Ah-EE-Ah, Learning in September...

It has been a wonderful first few weeks in Primary 2 Alpha, getting to know each other and settling into the new routines of life in Primary 2.

In Primary 2 we work hard and we play hard too! We have quickly set to work on our literacy and numeracy targets this term: working on our phonics and spelling rules, the powers of prediction, practising our number bonds to 20 and beyond, revising our months of the year and so much more. It has been such a joy to see the children's enthusiasm to learn and to soak up new concepts. I can see that we are set for a wonderful year together! Not only that, but the children's confidence and creativity shone so brightly when presenting their very first solo talks of the year. I am truly proud of you all.

We have so enjoyed PE outdoors, practising our dribbling, passing and aim through basketball and improving our general fitness in the gym hall too. We have also been learning about friendship and kindness with Mrs Renfrew and starting our journey to become technological whizz kids with Mr Edge, learning to log in to the chromebooks independently. Well done 2 Alpha!

We especially love our afternoons together, learning through play and integrating art, science, literacy, numeracy and many more learning opportunities through our wider learning. This month the children have soaked up every opportunity to learn about Peru (Paddington's home). The children's thoughtful class discussions about the similarities and difference between Peru and our home here in Scotland were just lovely to hear and the beautiful art work of Machu Picchu, the Incan Emperor and, of course, a friendly flock of Alpacas have filled our once empty classroom with life and colour. While the weather was on our side, we took our learning outdoors to recreate the Nazca Lines of Southern Peru - mixing art, social studies and mathematics too with a challenge to create their own designs that were at least 1 metre long.

The creation station, book corner, puppet theatre and block play areas of the classroom are firm favourites with the class. It is lovely to see the children's creativity and problem solving through their play and the wonderful personalities of the children shine. What clever little cookies we all are!

We are family!

Thank you so much to all of the parents, carers, grandparents and wider family who took the time to come along to visit for the Meet the Teacher evening and parents open afternoon this month. It was such a pleasure to have the chance to get to know some of the families of the children in the class and to read some of your own thoughts about your hopes for your children in Primary 2 this year.

I know how excited the children were to be able to share their learning with you too. My door is truly always open, if you ever have a question to ask or a talent that you might like to share(!) please never hesitate to catch me in the MUGA or to get in touch via the school office.

Wishing everyone a wonderful September weekend!
