Hello everyone, hope you're all well.

Here is our June newsletter, with updates on the life and learning of Primary 2Alpha :)

Fact & Opinion

One of the comprehension skills we've been developing has been our ability to define and distinguish between fact and opinion. We looked at a variety of different texts, identifying what information there was provable (fact) and what wasn't (opinion), in addition to sorting a range of different statements accordingly. Additionally we looked at different photographs from around the world successfully picking out examples of fact and opinion.

Poetry

The children have so enjoyed exploring a variety of styles of poetry this month, from acrostic poems about our favourite fruits and vegetables to creative black out poetry using the pages of some of our favourite classroom stories as our stimulus. The children have loved exploring poetry in the book corner too and taking opportunities to share their thoughts and feelings with their peers. Well done, Primary Two Alpha!

Numeracy & Mathematics

Addition & Subtraction

One of the skills we've been developing has been our ability to use addition and subtraction to solve problems. Having previously learned how to set out calculations vertically, we found out that some times solving them isn't so straight forward. We learned how to solve addition calculations with carrying and subtraction calculations with exchange, and then used this knowledge to solve a range of word problems.

Outdoor Learning

growing Plants 2

We have been exploring what plants need in order to grow and develop and using what we found out to grow healthy plants in our 'Secret Garden'. Our potato plants are flourishing, and our carrots are also coming along well.

Invertebrate hunt

As part of our learning about the different plants and animals that live in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park we went on an 'Invertebrate Hunt'. We used pit fall traps, beat sheets, and sweep nets to search for invertebrates living in the woodland. Having found a wide variety, we used magnifying glasses and charts to successfully identify the range of creatures that we had found.

Scotland's differing landscapes

As part of our learning about Scotland's differing landscape, we took a learning excursion to Balmaha, Loch Lomond. We climbed to the top of Craigie Fort which forms part of the 'Highland Boundary Fault Line' to get a good view of the surrounding landscape. Looking over the loch we were able to observe how different the landscape looked to the north, with all its mountains, to the south which was just a mixture of hills and fields.
