February 2024 - RSPB Birdwatch

We took part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. We found out about different birds and how to identify them. On the day of the birdwatch we spotted lots of big birds in our playground but not many little birds. We repeated the birdwatch weekly at the same time. Each time we tried a different way of identifying and recording the information. We even went outside with binoculars to identify birds that were too far away to identify from the classroom. We noticed that the results where different each week although their was always more big birds than smaller birds.

I can distinguish between living and non-living things. I can sort living things into groups and explain my decisions. - SCN 1-01a

I can explore examples of food chains and show an appreciation of how animals and plants depend on each other for food. - SCN 1-02

We can identify different bird using their features and markings.

We can sort living things by different criteria and discuss our choices.

We can use different techniques to record information eg (bar charts, pictograms, tally marks).

We can create food chains to show the producer, consumer, predator and prey.

We can talk about the impact of any changes to a food chain

As a class we decided to try and attract more smaller birds to our playground. We used our prior learning about ‘food chains’ (from the GSC Learning Lab) to work out how to do this. We identified that increasing the amount of food (bugs) available was a good way to attract smaller birds. We decided that bug hotels would by useful. We researched and designed our own bug hotels and added them to our secret garden.

Using what I know about the features of different types of texts, I can find, select, sort and use information for a specific purpose. LIT 1-14a

I am learning to make notes under given headings and use them to understand information, explore ideas and problems and create new texts. LIT 1-15

I explore ways to design and construct models. TCH 0-09a

We can find and select information to help our decisions when designing a model (big hotel).

We can make notes when reading different texts to explore and discuss our ideas.

We can design and make a bug hotel using natural and recycled materials.
