Bookbug Stay and Play We all enjoyed our Spook Bug this week and taking part in fun action songs such as Ten Little Witches on a Flying Broomstick, Incy Wincy Spider, Five Little Pumpkins sitting in a Field, Twinkle Twinkle and Halloween Is Coming. Thank you to everyone who managed along.
Experimenting with cause and effect and observing reactions by making spooky potions. We all loved it when our potions exploded!
Spooky Fun!
Race Tracks Following the children's interest in creating tracks, the children worked together to create one outside. Everyone showed good problem solving skills when fixing the track when it fell down, and by adding parts to the track. We demonstrated our understanding of forces by sharing knowledge that the track needs to be higher at the start so the cars move down quickly. Vroom vroom!
'higher, it makes the cars go down'
Great teamwork!
'it needs to be on a hill, the cars go faster'

Autumn Time Is Here We enjoyed a lovely Family Autumn Wellness walk around our local area. The children demonstrated their road safety awareness by waiting at the curb, looking and listening for traffic before stepping onto the road. We looked for signs of Autumn and spoke about the leaves changing colour as it's getting colder and falling off the trees. We had our own goody bag to collect the items such as pine cones, sticks and lots of different shapes, sizes and colours of leaves. Thank you to everyone who came along!
S spotted a worm lying a leaf!
We found mushrooms!
We touched the bark on the tree and discovered it felt 'bumpy' and 'hard'.
After our walk, we made transient art with our Autumn collection
Road Safety Following on from our road safety walks, the children were creating roads in the block area. This led to conversations regarding traffic lights and everyone showed a good understanding of what the colours represent. We made our own traffic lights and developed our literacy skills by writing 'stop' and 'go'. We then made traffic signs and added them to our play.
'red stop, green go'
'
'red means you have to stop, press a button and wait for the green man'
'they tell cars if they can go or not'

Measuring We are continuing our marvellous maths experiences by experimenting with scales and developing our understanding of what they do. We had fun comparing sizes and weights.
'goes down, heavy' N
'this is heavy'
'they check if things are heavy, it's not even lifting it up' T
We discovered the sand wasn't as heavy as the bricks
'It moved because the brick was in it, it's heavy' T
'If we put a block in this one it drops' O
'The sand is lighter' V
We decided to sit on the scales to see what would happen!
'we are heavy!' E
'I'm putting more sand in' O
'it's heavier now!' T
Rhyme of the Week Our 3 choices, 'Incy Wincy Spider', 'Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush' and ' Jelly On A Plate', were inspired by the children finding a spider outside and their comments about the the weather changing and eating jelly -
'My Grandpa was scraping his car, I was wearing my gloves and hat' H
'I ate jelly from the freezer, lemon green jelly' R
We sang the rhymes and had fun doing the actions. We even had E being the sun for 'Incy Wincy Spider'!
Let's vote!
We have a tie - two rhymes have 9 counters each! We did another vote with our hands.
Incy Wincy Spider is our
new Rhyme of the Week

Marvellous Maths There is lots of marvellous maths taking place during our maths week!
Ahoy me hearties! Inspired by 'Ten Little Pirates', the children have created a pirate ship, treasure chests, maps, telescopes and a parrot.
The children are also finding out about Fairtrade and if we buy food with the Fairtrade logo, farmers receive a good price for the food they have worked hard to produce and have better working conditions.
We went on a walk to our local shops to find food with the logo and found bananas, tomatoes, coffee and sugar. We bought bananas and sugar to take back to nursery to make banana bread.
We saw Sonny the parrot in the Pet Shop window
We had money in our purse and found number 10 on our £10 note. Our food cost £2.50 and we handed our money to the cashier and waited for change – she gave us lots of different coins and a £5 note.
We also found numbers on houses and on the road, and knew a number on the road means ‘that’s the speed you drive at’.

Family Wellness Road Safety Walk
We enjoyed our first Family Wellness Walk this week, focusing on road safety awareness. Some of the children had their adults join them and we were lucky to have fabulous sunny weather! We took a walk around our local area exploring the different road markings, finding and recognising different road signs and practising crossing the road at the pedestrian crossing. The children did a super job showcasing all of their learning and putting it into practise in a very responsible manner - well done! Thank you to those that joined us and we look forward to another walk next month.
We're going an a scavenger hunt, we're going to catch a big one!
The children had great fun going on a scavenger hunt in the Secret Garden this week. Wonderful problem solving and teamwork skills on display as the children worked in pairs to find everything on their checklists.
'I found a conker' V
'it's not on your list but I found a flower' V
Lots of sticks!
We found black currants growing on the bushes
We also found snails!
Another group had the chance to play in the Secret Garden and enjoyed lots of rolling down hills, and developing gross motor skills by pulling and pushing tyres.
Fergus from the Royal Horticultural Society came to visit the children and showed us how to grow indoor seeds.
Let's water the seeds (and the children!)
Fergus also read the children a story, How To Grow a Dinosaur.
Thank you for coming and sharing your planting knowledge with us.
We hope you will visit again soon to see how the seeds have grown

Our Secret Garden
A small group of us ventured into the Secret Garden this week behind the nursery outdoor space. Take a look at all the fantastic fun that took place! The Secret Garden provides a vast space for everyone to enjoy the freedom to learn an infinite array of skills such as
developing a love of exploring
discovering the natural world and nature
building relationships through teamwork and social interaction
encouraging adaptability and problem solving all the while feeling the sun and wind on our skin
We can't wait to go back again!
Let's roll!
More outdoor fun!
Ready or not, here I come!
Measuring using ourselves!
Mixing Colours
We discovered that by mixing colours together we can create new ones. The children had fun experimenting with paint, predicting what colours they would make. We developed our language skills by thinking of words to describe what the colours reminded us of.
'red and blue,
it made purple,
I love purple'
'look what colour I made, green and red, looks like brown grass'
'I'm adding green onto the red and blue, I made black.
A black hole!'
O correctly predicted to mix yellow to red.
'orange, it does make orange!'
The children then experimented with creating symmetrical artwork after discovering paint transfers onto paper when you fold it.
'it's the same'
Creative Cutting and Collages There was fantastic creative and cutting skills taking place this week as the children enjoyed using various types of paper and loose parts to create artwork. Great concentration and lots of individual artwork!
Our shiny paper is like a mirror!

Togetherness and Connection
Fun, joy and laughter filled the playroom this week as we welcomed families to our Stay and Play, and gave everyone an opportunity to meet the staff. It was wonderful to see parents, grandparents and carers participating in learning opportunities such as crafting, block play, stories and role play (the tea can be recommended) alongside the children. Learning together is so much fun.
Many thanks to everyone who came and your incredibly positive feedback. We look forward to the next one!
Together Time
There was even more fun learning going on at our Together Times. Every day we come together in our groups to discuss important matters, play games, sing songs, vote for our rhyme of the week all the while developing our social skills and reinforcing a sense of community and belonging. One of our friends brought in conkers and enjoyed telling their friends how they found them in the park. We passed them around so everyone had the opportunity to see and touch them - we were surprised they had tiny prickles on them and had something inside! Also…… did you know that Busby Nursery Class has a beautiful band? Watch this space! Our children have been developing their musicality skills, keeping a fast beat and regular rhythm.
'I found conkers!'
Bug in a rug, bug in a rug, who's our bug in a rug?
Great yoga moves!
August 2024
Welcome back everyone! We hope you had a lovely summer. We are delighted to welcome the children back, and our new friends to the nursery. Everyone has enjoyed settling in and exploring the nursery. Here's a look at what we have been busy doing the past few weeks.
Splash! Experimenting with forces and how water flows using our water wall. We can choose and access our resources independently.
'Wow, do that again! It even went into that one'
'I put it here, 3, 2, 1, blast off'
Exploring our outdoor space and building friendships.
'3 plus 2 equals 5'
Playdough Fun
'it's a prickle monster!'
Super Spreading
We are developing our independence and life skills by using tongs to select snack, pouring our own drink, and using a knife to spread butter on wraps.
Spreading is a fun way to develop hand strength, co-ordination and rotation - great skills everyone!
Yum, yum!
Sensory
Sensory processing helps us figure out how to respond to the world around us using our five senses. There has been lots of super sensory fun this week can you guess what senses we used? The children have enthusiastically been exploring shaving foam, slime and much more!
Helicopter Stories
The Helicopter Stories method encourages children to be natural storytellers. Adults scribe the child’s story then with their peers they gather around the ‘story stage’ to retell and re-enact the story. The author of the story can choose which character they want to be, then from there the adult supports turn taking with the children to assign the rest of the characters. Everything comes from the child and their imagination. The adult is the facilitator. This week there’s been an excellent array of stories including dragons, fairy gardens and superheroes! It’s a truly magical experience for all involved.
