Wonderful Woodwork
The children have enjoyed developing their woodwork and creative skills. Inspired by Charlie Crow in the Snow book, some children were keen to make their own crow while others wished to create a squirrel, a unicorn or a robot.
"I'm doing it with my big muscles!"
Using the vice to keep our wood steadyÂ
"I want to make a carriage too!"
Great teamwork, you discussed ideas together to work out what you needed to create a carriage.
Being creative using loose parts
"I want to make a carriage to go with my dolls house"
Amazing imaginations and creations!
Year of the Rabbit
We are celebrating Chinese New Year and exploring letter and number symbols. We are finding out it lasts for 15 days, is the year of the rabbit and is linked to the stages of the moon.Â
Fantastic writing skills everyone!
Yoga and mindfulness based on the origin story of the Chinese calendar.
Building strength, balance and confidence. Wonderful stretching, poses and concentration!

The children have been outside and talking about how cold it is. They went on an ice hunt and found lots of pieces of ice in different shapes and sizes.
Thin Ice
There was ice on the ball!
We found ice on the spoon!
Thick Ice
Small Ice
Big Ice
There was some ice on the wooden plank!
We found ice in the bark area!
Ice on the floor!
Ice in the tray!
Ice in the sand tray!
We added water to the bowls
We took the different sizes of bowls outside.
We chose what materials and objects we wanted in the bowls.
We added glitter
We then left them overnight and predicted if they WILL freeze or if they will NOT freeze.
They froze overnight! We then decided to add them to the water table to experiment with.
We used different liquids and substances such as salt and hot water to see if the ice would melt/crack to release our hidden objects!
The children used the interactive smartboard to explore opera music using the game 'Blob Opera'. The children used their fingers to move each character and listened to the different sounds they made. The children listened to the different; tones, sounds and harmony.
Each character had a different sound and some sounded 'higher' and 'lower' than the others.
Music helps our body and mind work together.
The children have been interested in using different materials to paint. They have used a variety of different sizes and colours of strings to do line painting.
Inspired by these artists the children then made their own versions of this piece of art. They used a variety of media such as; crayons, pens and pencils to create their own animals.
They used wooden pegs to help develop their fine motor skills and hand eye co-ordination by grasping the strings with the pegs.
As the children were engrossed doing the string painting and looking at the different lines we used the internet to research different artists that do line paintings. We found out that the artists are called; Steven Brown, David Hockey and Rennie MacKintosh.Â
One child commented "I have one of those paintings in my house at the stairs!"
We have been putting the screws into the wood by ourselves and using the screwdriver to make the screw rotate and go into the wood. We have learned if you rotate it the other way the screw starts coming back out.
A couple of the children have been talking about unicorns and they wanted to create their own. One child didn't know if unicorns have tails so we used the internet to research and we found out that they do have tails!
Hammering this time using smaller nails, this can be quite tricky because they are smaller!
Sawing and measuring the length
"I want it this long!"
"My unicorn is finished! I used the nail for the horn and string for the hair and tail!"
Great idea!
We will be reading this book 'Sugarlump and the unicorn' by Julia Donaldson to help us link our learning together.
We will also be further learning about unicorns for Scotland week as an unicorn is Scotland's national animal.
Happy New Year!
Welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely break.
Sorting, Matching Sizes and Counting, Following Patterns and Problem Solving
"I did it all myself!"
"Let's do it together!"
"We made a zero!"
Model Making & Threading Skills with Magic Maize
"Look, look at my wiggly worm!"
I wonder how it works...
"put water on it and it sticks"
"I made a wee man"
We are concentrating very hard while threading needles - fantastic hand eye co-ordination and fine motor skills!
"a seesaw"
While experimenting with the magic maize, needles and ribbons, the children's creativity extended to making types of jewellery.
