Millard County in Utah is a place to spend time if you are interested in rocks and especially fossils. In the eastern part of the county there are several ranges of mountains, the House and Confusion Ranges have a layer of uplift where the capstone quartzite covers sedimentary layers. These ranges have eroded into alkali valleys. The map below shows the range of mountains where the Pogonip Ordovician formation can be found.
Across from the Pogonip layer and the Confusion Range is a dramatic outcrop. This is a beautiful vista of Notch peak--a spectacular cliff of dolomite and limestone.
The short video below gives a sweeping view of this area.
There are fossils at the junction of the quartzite and underlying layers and in the shale-like stone. Trilobites found in the massive dark grey shale can be seen in the photos below.
There are large tubular shells in the Pogonip layer. These look like a type of cephalopod. There are ammonites aplenty and I even found a starfish.
Near the Pogonip site right on highway 50 at Skull Pass there is a layer of rock with trilobites. We searched and searched and found munched bits and pieces. It is unclear what sort of Trilobite this was!
