There are a few sites near Succor Creek that have interesting fossils. The ash has covered plant fossils and left imprints in a couple of areas (near red dot on map) and petrified wood (near yellow square on map) can be found over the entire area.
Driving south on the Succor creek road before the junction of road 816, you will notice white hills to the right. There is a rutted path toward this area that required a high-centered vehicle. In less than a mile you will find a clearing and then some small mounds of the white ask mixed with rock and wood. Larger pieces require some hunting!
A variety of leaf fossils can be found further down the road past the crossroads of road 816. Look for pits that have been dug near the road. It is a bit dirty work requiring digging in fine ash, but the rewards are great!
The territory just looks like typical desert except the surface is littered with plates of fine tuff.
My rockhound guide, Bob, likes to take action shots of the hunt.
