Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.

• Final runs of initial testing phase

  • Once finished, will present results to sponsor and go through rigorous design review, thus will begin the redesign phase

Accomplishments from Previous Week

• Stress

  • As seen in proof of concept, assembled form factor for rubber band testing (John)

  • Assembled rubber bands to best resemble nerves (John)

    • Split rubber band = severed

    • Stapled rubber band = sutured

  • Used calibration weights instead of graph to calibrate FSR (John and Ryan)

    • Curve fit data points (Ryan)

  • Tested ability to get values on rubber band (John)

  • Began search for smaller circuit components (bread board, LCD Screen, battery pack, microcontroller) (Ryan)

• Strain

  • Successfully developed working MATLAB script and obtained displacement matrices (Archana and Tejas)

  • Used spherical markers on rubber band surface and stretched the bands to simulate deformation (Tejas)

  • Began search for different marker types (Archana)

  • Create list of new components to order for next iteration

  • Create list of all design decisions for design review

    • Specific list of materials for new iteration → made of different materials for different functions

• Strain (Archana and Tejas)

  • Start looking into adhesives and biocompatible methods to attach the markers to the tissue surface

    • One potential concept is a “barbed” marker with little claws to grip the outer surface of the nerve tissue

  • Look into the concept of using “sticky” surgical rulers along with injectable medical dye to measure the marker movement

    • Looking to create a “final” iteration instead of more multiple prototypes

    • Looking to critique all aspects from testing phase, take into consideration for this last iteration

  • Pleased with current progress and where the group is in the grand scope of the project

    • Was nice to hear, team is looking to have a solid final design to cap off all progress made this quarter

  • During last phases of testing, wants us to document all design decisions regarding prototypes and anything else we might want to add or change

    • Will document and organize all decisions made, along with comments and recommendations for changes to integrate in next iteration

  • For stress: look into eventual biocompatible materials for clamps (not necessarily for manufacturing right now, but for future of device)

    • Will look into most biocompatible 3D materials we can use, will add list of biocompatible materials for design recommendations at the very least

  • For strain: look into bio compatible ruler for distance calibration for camera

    • Will look into obtaining such ruler
