Team 14 Progress Report
Winter 21 - Week 4
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Officially in testing phase for both stress and strain
Stress: Calibrating FSR, parts for first prototype ordered
Strain: Testing software for use w/ imaging process
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Stress: (Ryan and John)
Assembled initial circuit for force sensitive resistor
Going through calibration tests to make sure force readings are accurate
Have to tweak arduino code as of Tuesday
Initial 3D printed parts have been ordered for push and pull mechanisms
Design tweaked to mimic handling of surgical tool, approved by Sameer
Strain: (Tejas and Archana)
Downloaded image correlation software
Currently viewing software tutorials and making sure we understand how the strain values are obtained
Will transfer practice video files into the software and attempt to obtain a strain field
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Stress:
Assemble 3D printed parts (hopefully) in time for Proof of Concept presentation (Shipped to John, assembled/tweaked by Ryan and John)
Use calibration weights to check accuracy of FSR calculation (Physical model w/ John, code tweak by Ryan and John)
Test interfacing w/ rubber bands to test useability, hopefully get force reading from pulling on rubber band (John)
Strain:
Perform some testing on rubber bands in time for Proof of Concept presentation (Archana and Tejas)
Record any cases where the software fails/our method does not work (Archana and Tejas)
Overall:
Finalize if methods are acceptable for using for final design (Both teams)
(Done through testing and tweaking, will most likely extend past next week)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Met with Sameer on 1/26/21 (Over Zoom) - Update meeting regarding progress:
Showed current design for stress mechanism to 3D print with tweaks to fit image of surgical tool - Sameer approved parts for ordering
Parts have been ordered, will update Sameer once assembly is complete
Discussed completion of initial FSR circuit, current progress w/ FSR readings through Arduino - Currently seems to be overestimating force, told us to keep testing
Will use calibration weights to test code, will tweak where necessary
Discussed two current options for code for digital imaging - Advised that we find configurations of rubber band and markers designed to “trick” the code to see which is more robust
Will implement into testing
Asked about potential for testing on animal tissue samples from Sameer’s lab - Lab currently still closed to undergraduates, but Sameer said we can find a way to maybe get us some rat tissue samples
Will discuss in future testing
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Instructor comments from Design Proposal Presentation (1/21/21)
Asked about current orientation of stress measurement devices’ translation
Would look into 90 degree orientation (need some clearing up about it), but current orientation was approved by Sameer
Asked about if code was built from scratch or based off of model (for strain)
Explained we’re looking at model for now to see if it works for our purposes
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
From Design Proposal Presentation (via questions at end of presentation)
Inquiries regarding general scope of project
Inquiries regarding decisions about current methods, materials, etc.
Inquiries about surgical integration aspect
(All answered appropriately)
Risks and Areas of Concern
Eventual translation from rubber bands to nerves
Resources or Information Required but not Available
(Looking ahead into projects)
In talks with Sameer regarding using certain animal tissue for testing
Matter of how to obtain and test, since undergraduates are currently not allowed in the research lab, status to be determined
Schedule
Friday-Weekend: FSR testing, Digital Imaging testing, Push/Pull assembly (hopefully)
Rest of Week: Preparation for Proof of Concept Presentation
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
Amount Spent: $157.66
Amount Remaining: $2442.34
