1/26/21 Professor Meeting
Weekly Progress Report
What have been done in the past week
Continued constructing models finalized in first 2 weeks of quarter
2D moment tool materials purchased and currently in machine shop
3D moment about an axis model completed
Reactions at supports and connections model was redesigned and is currently in the process of construction
Brainstormed ideas for the following design challenges:
Truss Challenge
Produced 2 different ideas to implement
Center of Mass Challenge
Created a list of preliminary designs for shapes
Hyatt Regency Model
Bought materials
3D printed parts
Made Solidworks assemblies
Vector in a Box Model
Presented first design to sponsor
Created sketches of one configuration
Researched materials to purchase
Feedback from meeting with sponsor
Truss Bridge
Suggested Lego-technic parts (beams, caps, etc)
3D printed truss member no longer a top material choice
Material properties non-homogeneous
Costly + requires hours of printing
Would need to factor in labor fee (~$15/hr)
Should consider pros and cons of different materials
Preferred to have multiple truss structure options (roof, bridge, etc)
Utilize gussets (could be another constraint, limited amount given)
Brainstorm more details about the supports
Justify design decisions instead of asking for sponsor preference
Center of Mass
Create a mix of shapes that incorporate additive and subtractive methods of computing center of mass
Make sure the each shape can be stacked in multiple configurations
meaning not just rest on the top of stack
Find a material that students can use to construct the shapes themselves
Vector Box
A telescoping vector is more suitable than stacking magnets
Interlocking box sides will make assembly easier and model more robust
The plane can come from the box sides or attach onto the vector
Hyatt Regency
Delay Solidworks simulations, focus on building the physical model
$750 is our budget for research/prototyping -- larger budget for mass production of design challenges
List your current concern according to the importance
Finalizing the details of the truss design challenge
Materials should be purchased before the end of the week
Ask Professor Qi how our group should approach the “Applicable Standards” and the “Prototype Performance” sections of the report
What is the next step of your project
Build Hyatt Regency model this week
Finish building the reaction supports/constraints model this week
Finish building the 2D moment demonstration tool
Finalize designs for shapes for center of mass design challenge
Finalize designs, buy materials, and start building prototypes for the truss design challenge
Proof of Concept Presentation due next Tuesday
First draft of report due next Friday
Purchase supplies for the vector box
