Larger Model for In-Person Instruction
Smaller Model for Virtual Instruction
General Description
This design consists of 3 interconnecting lengths of PVC pipes supported by a wooden base. The pipes are able to be maneuvered and rotated, which is the primary function for visualizing moment. It is also possible to remove and replace these pipes, which allows the user to create any configuration they desire. Finally, there are 3 arrows connected to the base of the device, which help the student to visualize different axes.
Definitions/Engineering Topic Covered
Three interconnected pipe lengths bend and rotate to showcase a 3D moment about a point. A metal pipe flange stands to represent the point about which the 3D moment occurs. There are three axes marked with arrows that allow students to visualize where the moment happens. The pipes can physically bend to best convey the idea of a moment.
Learning Objective
Students will be able to visually interpret a 3D moment about a point
Students can predict which joints/members experience moment based on where a force is placed
How to use
1. Rearrange axis labels to desired configuration
2. Rearrange pipe lengths according to problem or designed lesson
3. Twist and push at desired point to demonstrate moment
