Progress Report Week 6 Winter Quarter
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
User testing session with pediatric surgeon Dr. Timothy Fairbanks for tissue
Muscle:
The clear silicone caulking was the best option, either spread in a thin slab or in connected strands
Skin:
Our skin had a realistic texture and color, we are working on making George’s model to compare manufacturing
Flesh:
Ballistic gel had a very accurate texture, and the surgeon was very impressed. The shorter and easier manufacturing also impressed George.
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Skinfold:
Decided to rebrand “skinfold” as “tissue”
Pressure delivery:
Last components for testing pumps & entire flow system have been ordered
Team:
First round of testing with surgeons went really well, our materials choice and design decisions have been validated
Muscle model:
Found appropriate and cost-effective model: silicone caulking with food coloring
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Tissue (Reem and Rahaf):
Redesign 3D printed enclosure to be smaller
Design neck collar to minimize risk of leaks
Pressure Delivery(Guinevere, Yichen, and Samantha):
Test all 3 pumps
Evaluate pumps and chose a prefered pump
Team:
Perfect muscle model
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
No need to mimic pulse in the pressure delivery system, as the procedure happens so quickly that a pulse wouldn’t be noticed anyway.
Veins need to be two times larger in diameter than arteries
The box containing tissues has right size and mimics anatomical restrictions
Try to use glycerin and food color to make the artificial blood
Comments on muscles:
The texture & thickness (~4mm) of the clear silicone with food coloring was good for babies
The texture & thickness (~6mm) of the clear silicone with silicone coloring was good for older patients, but was too tough
The fibrous option was great for fibrous nature of muscle
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Change the duration on casting glycerin & gelatin.
Professor appreciated that there are three approaches to test the material.
Risks and Areas of Concern
There are electronics in the mannequins that Rady will be using: we don’t want leakage from the “blood”
