Week 7 Progress Report
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Completed 3 layered carbon fiber ring segment layup, and test strength of carbon fiber segments
Printed multiple prototypes of ring segment connection
FEA analysis on 3D printed connection joint
Preliminary FEA analysis on carbon fiber support ring in Abaqus
Purchased elastic and adjustable belt for final waistband seal design
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Began full size segment layup (completed two full-sized ring segments)
Started the first of the composite analysis in abaqus for the support ring
Begin tolerance test on connection joints.
Modeled curing frame components in Inventor and AutoCAD
Ordered and received belt for waistband seal component.
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Lasercamm the curing frame pieces and assemble. (Jen)
Manufacture a ring segment with the curing frame(Jen and Jackie).
Define proper tolerance of linkage segment to carbon fiber ring within 2 mm diameter(Brian and Jackie).
3D print connection piece and test the structural integrity of the connector (Jackie).
Conduct multiple FEA analysis on carbon fiber rings with different numbers of layers and directions(Brian).
Buy more insulation foam for ring segment layups(Jackie).
Sew pouch onto waistband belt and test. (Jen)
Design wire outlet on the top plate (Geoffrey).

We should brief next quarter’s MAE 156B students on our progress.
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Flexible press fit solution chosen for connection between the carbon fiber ring segment and connector piece to avoid drilling of 3D printed parts.
Pursue wire outlet through the top plate instead of from the waistband to improve the ease of design and quality of seal.
