Week 10 Progress Report

Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.

• • “Final” Design Completed (Final in quotes because we have completed our final designs but will be handing off the project for further work to the next 156B team)

  • Met with new 156B team that will continue work on the project

  • Two half circle carbon fiber segment lay up completed

  • Report and Web Page 95% Completed

Accomplishments from Previous Week

• • Met with new 156B team

    • Explained how the device works with demo

    • Walked them through the main problems we have been focusing on and our design solutions

    • Met up again to demo our carbon fiber layup process (Monday afternoon)

  • Planned time to meet with Tom and Steve from the machine shop to test new carbon fiber ring segment (Tuesday 3/10, 11AM)

  • Insulation foam rods arrived

  • Wet layup for two half circle ring segments completed (currently curing)

  • Talked with Steve from machine shop about potential carbon fiber fabrication improvements

    • Main recommendation: use silicone tape or wrap to wrap the segments while they cure. Make the finish as smooth as possible to remove lamination creases which can cause concentrated stress points. 

  • Made substantial progress on the final report and web page. 

  • Abaqus FEA analysis for 2 layer carbon fiber ring further improved

  • Finished project poster draft

  • Webpage mostly completed. Need to shoot video for the web page. Need to sort out formatting issues with Google Sites.
