Week 4 Progress Report
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Decided on material (carbon fiber) for internal reinforcement hoops.
Researching fabrication methods for carbon fiber hoops.
Still waiting for the closed-cell foam order to arrive from McMaster.
Carbon Fiber sheets and epoxy obtained for testing and prototyping.
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Talked to Steve Roberts and Chris Cassidy about material and fabrication options for reinforcement hoops
Decided on material for reinforcement hoops (carbon fiber)
Sourced a small amount of epoxy from Greg Specht to start fabricating a carbon fiber hoop segment
Researched fabrication methods for carbon fiber hoops
Layer sheets of carbon fiber around a 3D printed hoop segment mold, epoxy, and cure
Slip carbon fiber sleeves over insulation foam and shape into desired diameter hoop before epoxying and curing
Researched epoxy and carbon fiber vendors
Obtained a pressure transducer from Dr. Lonnie Petersen to more accurately record chamber pressure
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Order/find carbon fiber sleeves, epoxy, insulation foam, cups, mixing sticks, gloves, masks, and cleaning supplies (Brian, Jackie, Jen, Geoffrey)
Test run fabrication of carbon fiber with the carbon fiber sheets and epoxy that we have already obtained (Brian, Jackie)
Make preliminary CAD model for connection mechanism for hoop segments (Jen)
If time permits, CNC prototype connection mechanism (Jen, Jackie)
Cut and prototype waistband with foam (Jen, Geoffrey)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Sponsor agreed with material decisions for the reinforcement hoops
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Look into using heat-moldable foam for waistband area (in person) - Some research done, we found that most of the commercially available options are sold in the form of ski boot liners, cannot find stock options to shape ourselves
