System Prototype
Cell Recovery System Simulation
Completed prototype (bioreactor, stirring stage, control system) tested in the process of settling, extracting, feeding, and stirring media inside bioreactor.
Bioreactor
Final Design
Side View
Exploded View
Final design of bioreactor comprising of 4 ports (including bacterial air vent) fabricated using strong sealants. Cells are fed and maintained using 2 peristaltic pumps.
Preliminary Design
Preliminary design of bioreactor. Later replaced by a 4 lid port design.
Lid Ports
Ports are drilled in and fitted using bolts and sealants to guarantee aseptic conditions as requested from sponsor.
Side Port
A key component of the bioreactor used to harvest live cells after the thawing process is complete.
*Suggested by our sponsor, the side port has been discarded for another top port for extraction.
Early Concepts
Sponsor Suggested Design
Bioreactor design suggested by sponsors with cell extraction on side port. This concept was later adopted for the final concept design.
Bottom Port Design
Feeding through bottom port serves purpose of backflushing the the bottom surface, preventing clumping of cells.
Bottom Port Design with tubes, pumps, and feeder
Overall design of bioreactor utilizing bottom port to serve as feeder and extractor.

Stirring Stage Rotation
Final Design (Transparent Top Plate)
Exploded View
Final design comprised of linear guide rails & ball bearing carriages, 3 levels of plates, and a crank; with the stage driven by a stepper motor.
Crank
A key component of the final design. The crank allows for a adjustable radius of rotation as requested from sponsor.
Crank to Top Plate Component
Another key component that connects the crank to the top plate. This allows top plate to be disassembled to adjust the radius of rotation.
Early Concepts
Stirring Concept Demo
Stirring stage design demonstration utilizing linear railings and a crank system. This concept was later adopted to put together the final concept design.
Linear Guide Rail System
Stirring stage was planned to use a X-Y slider to replicate circular motion. A screw powered by a stepper motor would move sliders.
Tilting Stage

Exploded View
Final design of tiling stage with various angles for live cell extraction.
Early Concepts
Tilting Stage Concept
Tilting stage concept sketch used to assist in extraction of live cells within bioreactor.

Controller Enclosure Model with Front Mounted Pumps
Final design for the system controller comprising of a digital display, start & emergency stop button, and front mounted pumps.
Controller User Interface
Demonstration of changing parameters within control user interface.
Program Demo
Controller demonstration of the automated process program of the stirring, settling, removing, and feeding of cells within bioreactor.
Controller with motors and program running
Image of running controller with display ON and various motors attached to simulate motors within the design.
