Skin and Bones

My work is all sculptural. I want my work to have a physical presence in space, to be something tangible that you can reach out and touch, and so sculpture has always drawn me in. I work mainly in clay, because I enjoy its fleshy nature, and the methods used to build with it. However, my pieces are never about the material, and so I don’t leave the clay bare or use glazes or other specialized ceramic treatments in my work. I also love sculpture for its ability to confront the viewer. I’m interested in the ways that a piece can be given an equal presence in space to the person viewing it, put itself on the same footing as the person looking at it, and how that influences the ways that a piece is seen. Though my work is of animals, it addresses very human issues and topics, delving into the realms of self portraiture, reflection on the subconscious, and the idea of the inner self. My sculptures focus on a sense of dichotomy, and the way in which two contrasting elements can be present at the same time, creating a sense of tension and unease.
