GURT

What is GURT?

GURT is the Georgetown University Round Table on Languages and Linguistics. It is an international conference held every year at Georgetown University.

Professor Cochrane has been leading a student-faculty trip with William & Mary students to this conference in most years since 2014. Through funding from the W&M Charles Center, students' registration fees are fully covered. It is a wonderful experience for students to learn about the latest academic research in linguistics, as well as providing networking opportunities through poster sessions. Inspired by their trip to GURT, William & Mary linguistics students have gone on to conduct their own research, such as honor theses.

Students review conference etiquette on their laptops as part of their preparation for GURT.

Preparing for the Conference

For several weeks before the conference, Professor Cochrane and students meet to read and discuss research done by the plenary speakers. Students additionally learn academic conference etiquette in order to be fully prepared.
