Discourse Analysis at William & Mary

Students in a linguistics class study on the sunken gardens

What We Do

The DA@W&M research group studies Discourse Analysis, a field of linguistics. Discourse Analysis focuses on relating spoken or written language to a larger social context.

For more information, visit our page on Our Projects.

Why Discourse Analysis?

Discourse analysis, and sociocultural linguistics generally, is concerned with connecting language patterns to the lived experiences of language users. Every study should give back to the participants, their communities, and/or society at large. By doing discourse analysis, we hope not only to add to the body of scholarly knowledge, but also to support positive social changes in the world.
