-Sir Thomas Brown
Inquisitiveness, a thirst for knowledge, and wonder are prerequisites for this History course where students will approach global history through case studies that explore timeless thematic issues, rather than following a strict chronology. Each unit will include opportunities for student choice and independent research. By following such a model, students will be able to develop an understanding of human nature across time and place, and they will explore trends from a variety of civilizations and peoples. The course design calls for students to dig deep within given times and places and wonder about the significance of these cases to the present. Students themselves will have a large about of choice in making those connections. In this way, the course will be an excellent way for students to develop inquiry skills of questioning, researching, and communicating.
Students should expect to be challenged in World History Honors. It can be a preparation for Advanced Placement Social Science courses such as AP U.S. History, AP European History, and AP Psychology. At the same time, the course can be an opportunity students interested in history to challenge themselves. Because Honors World History does not have to cover the same amount of content that an AP course or core course does, more time can be devoted to practicing the higher level skills that will be utilized in future high school courses, college courses, and careers. As a result of the course, students should expect both academic growth and personal enrichment.
