Academic Literacy 10 is a course designed to accelerate a student’s growth as a reader with specific attention to his or her comprehension, fluency, multi-syllabic word reading, and vocabulary. Students receive direct instruction in key reading strategies including previewing, predicting, and identifying an author’s purpose, inferences, questioning, connecting and summarizing. In addition to these strategies, students also learn both content vocabulary and vocabulary strategies, as well as receive fluency instruction. The Academic Literacy teachers work in conjunction with the English 10 and American Government instructors in order to pre-teach or re-teach skills that are being addressed in the content area classes.
