Economics is a discipline of the social sciences that examines the allocation of resources and their alternative uses in satisfying the needs and wants of individuals. Key concepts include: scarcity, opportunity cost, cost/benefit analysis, circular flow, supply and demand, elasticity, socioeconomic issues, monetary policy, trade and investment options. The semester will be divided into micro and macroeconomics, separated by an investment unit. Emphasis will placed on real world economic issues that influence our daily lives. This course also offers Blended Learning sections. Blended learning is an approach to learning that combines face-to-face and online learning experiences. There is a combination of student days in class and out of class. This flexible use of time allows the teacher to bring in small groups of students for targeted support and/or enrichment and it allows students to have more ownership over how, when and where they learn.
Rationale: Economic activity pervades every aspect of life. Therefore, knowledge of economic concepts and systems should be a part of every citizen’s education in today’s world. This course offers a high degree of academic literacy for the student interested in a business career in marketing, management, investment banking or starting a business.
