David Smith

David Smith graduated from Eastern Hancock in 1972.  He is one of the few Eastern Hancock athletes to letter in four varsity sports in a single school year, winning varsity letters in football, basketball, rack, and baseball in high school.  David was a two year starting quarterback, leading the Royals to their first Big Blue River Conference championship in 1971 with an 8-1 record.  He was named the team's outstanding offensive back, setting single game and season records for passing yards, with the season mark standing for over 30 years.  David earned three varsity letters in basketball and was a two starter.  He was named first team first team all-sectional as a senior and second team as a junior and all-Big Blue River Conference as a senior. David was the third leading scorer in the area as a senior and won the team's free throw award, hitting 87% of his 124  free throws. David was All-Big Blue River Conference in track as both a junior and Senior.  His Senior year, David set the conference record in the 880 yard run and was conference champion in both the 880 yard run and the pole vault.  David's school record time of 2:00.30 in the 880 set in 1972 is Eastern Hancock's longest standing school record in track.  David was a four year letter winner and winner of the Greenfield American Legion Award in baseball as a senior.  David was presented the Wilkinson Firemen's Award in 1972 as the senior making the greatest contribution to Eastern Hancock Athletics in mental attitude, scholarship, sportsmanship, and athletic ability.  David went onto graduate from Anderson College, where he was a starter on the basketball team.  David is now general manager of Smith Implements.  He and his wife, Susan, a have 3 children and 4 grandchildren and currently live near St. Paul.
