Dress Code

Applies to all students of Eerde International Boarding School and Eerde International Primary School

Purpose

Eerde does not have a school uniform. We do expect students to dress appropriately for an international learning environment and for life in a boarding community. To avoid different interpretations, this policy sets out concrete, measurable standards for what is and is not allowed.

During School Day (08:30 – 17:00)

• Shorts, skirts and dresses: length must reach at least mid-thigh when standing (the fingertip rule applies: with arms relaxed by the side, the hem must reach at least to the fingertips).

• Tops: straps must be at least 2 cm wide (approximately one finger). Strapless tops, single-shoulder tops and visible underwear or lingerie straps are not allowed.

• Midriff: the stomach and lower back must be covered when standing and when sitting down.

• Necklines must sit no more than 10 cm (1 hand width) below the collarbone.

• Fabric must not be see-through. If a garment is sheer or transparent, an opaque layer must be worn underneath.

• Sportswear (leggings, jogging bottoms, sports tops) may be worn during lessons outside of PE, provided it is clean and not visibly worn for sport that day (no kit still wet or muddy from training).

• Caps, beanies and hoods may not be worn indoors. Headwear with a religious or cultural meaning, such as a headscarf, may always be worn.

Evenings and weekends

Outside lesson hours, in the evenings and at weekends, students have more freedom in the boarding common areas (dining hall, common rooms, corridors). 

Not allowed at any time, anywhere on campus

• Visible underwear or lingerie (waistbands or straps showing through or above clothing).

• Sleepwear, including slippers, outside boarding (except weekend brunch).

• Open toed shoes worn in the kitchen, science labs, PE, Art or on school trips or activities. 

• Clothing with offensive, profane, drug or alcohol related, discriminatory, or sexually explicit text or imagery.

Special occasions

For formal occasions, such as graduation, visits from guests or special dinners, the school will specify in advance what is expected (for example: smart casual, collared shirt, no jeans). This will be communicated by the mentor or boarding staff at least one week ahead.
