The First week of the year is always spent doing various introductory presentations and activities to get everyone ready for the year ahead.
To welcome our new students and to welcome back our returning students we use the first week to do some team building activities, alongside introductory presentations and info sessions. See also section Starting at Eerde

At Eerde International Boarding School, we pride ourselves on our sense of internationalism, diversity and ability to enjoy and understand these as a community
This year we will host an international week, where we will celebrate our respective cultures in ways such as:
International PotLuck shared lunch. During this lunch we will ask students (and their families) and staff members to prepare a local dish from their country. This has been a successful event every year!
Morning activities centred around diversity
Celebrations and understanding of the different cultures and languages
Assemblies and lunchtime activities
With more than 30 nationalities within our community, you can only imagine the diversity of this week.
Important is that we understand and respect each other's cultures, taste local flavours and celebrate the diversity in our community.
We look forward to this week and want to encourage all at Eerde to participate, to communicate, to integrate and to be part of a wonderful week filled with events catered to our uniqueness.

Your Face Sounds Familiar is a competition that challenges musical and acting ability. Our students and staff will be tasked to nominate contestants from their houses. The contestants will be given a week to practice their randomly assigned music video, which they recreated with the help of costumes, dedication and practice. The winners are the ones that have the most accurate recreation of the music video!

With a castle like ours, how can we not do something with that during Halloween!
Where our primary students are invited to dress up in Halloween style, our secondary IB students make it a competition to make our haunted castle during Halloween scarier each year!
Primary
For our primary students we will have fun activities like pumpkin carving, trick or treating, and eating scary food. But since last year they have also enjoyed the haunted castle of secondary, of course they enjoy the light version of the haunted castle. ;-)
Secondary
It's been a tradition at Eerde for decades, for our students to decorate our castle for Halloween evening and lead the students through the castle on a scary tour, involving our staff members! This event is often organised by our IB1 students, as part of their CAS, where they work together with a group of teachers to transform the castle into a spooky space. The other secondary students, or at least the ones who dare, will be led through the various rooms, in each of which they will encounter different themes.
This event not only provides a great opportunity to generate some community spirit, but also encourages the organising students to appreciate that organising such an event is a challenging task, yet also an extremely rewarding one. Experiential learning and reflection is at the heart of the Diploma Program.

We are extremely proud to be an official partner of the world-renowned Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The Rijksmuseum houses a rich collection of works by Dutch masters including Rembrandt, Vermeer and van Hals.
Eerde and the Rijksmuseum are creating learning opportunities to incorporate the Rijksmuseum heritage to enrich and extend into international educational programmes.
Our partnership enables the School to use art lessons and frequent museum visits to help our students connect with art in new and meaningful ways all while enjoying an enhanced learning process!
IB History tour
In the last year, we have co-worked on a history tour especially for all IB students for all international schools in the Netherlands. This program was introduced in the fall of 2023.
Workshops and exhibitions
Because we are an official partner, we get to see the most exciting and newest exhibitions at the museum.
To prepare our students for this, we plan a special customised workshop with a conservator from the Rijksmuseum at our campus in November and we will visit the Rijks with the whole school in spring.
Next to the exhibition there will be workshops held at the museum, which may vary per grade.
One very special celebration in December that is celebrated at Eerde every year, is the Dutch traditional celebration of Sinterklaas, who visits our Primary students every December the 5th.
Kids are waiting enthusiastically for this celebration, involving a lot of preparations from them, too – they write letters and send letters with drawings to Sinterklaas already 3 weeks before he visits us. They learn various songs which they will sing for him when he arrives, both in English and Dutch language.

Another true Eerde tradition is the Eerde Christmas dinner on Thursday evening before the Christmas Break starts.
All of our secondary students and staff members wear their most beautiful suits and gowns, and our marvellous kitchen crew is doing their magic in the kitchen to create a wonderful dinner.
Before we start the christmas dinner, we will have our Ceremony of light.
After everybody finishes their dinner, music will turn on, and there will be a small after party at the castle, mostly organised by our IB students!

We celebrate Lunar New Year, also called Chinese Chunjie, Vietnamese Tet, Korean Solnal, Tibetan Losar, also called Spring Festival.
This festival is typically celebrated in China and other Asian countries and begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends on the first full moon of the lunar calendar, 15 days later. Sumptuous and abundant, the family reunion dinner served on Lunar New Year’s Eve is undeniably a highlight of the entire event together with some live performances from students and teachers.

A chance to consider what we want to do in the future.
To help our students consider their future careers we will be holding a day of career related activities and talks. We invite people with different types of careers to introduce themselves during this afternoon, to speak with the students, explain more about their job, the path they have walked to get there, and students get the chance to ask anything they would like.
This should be a good opportunity for our younger students to start thinking about what they might like to do when they “grow up” and for our older students to consider their university and progression options.

Another Eerde tradition is the annual ski trip. This trip is organised during the spring break and students can opt to join this!
The exact whereabouts of the trip are not known yet, however we will be going to Austria again!
Students will be grouped according to their ski experience. No experience in skiing → NO PROBLEM, we will arrange for you to learn how to ski.
Like last year, we will bring along our own ski teachers, who have lots of experience to teach children how to ski.
A group of staff members will join the group of students as well, and will supervise the students 24/7. We will be travelling by coach leaving on Sunday and returning on Friday.
In the evening there will be a full program of swimming, playing games and also time to relax.

For students who are looking for a fun activity to do during the spring break but are not into skiing, or prefer to go on a culture trip, we also offer a Spring Trip.
Whereabouts for this trip are also not known yet, but in previous years we went to Spain, Portugal, Kenya and Poland!
During these trips we focus on the culture of the country, to learn new things and have experiences outside of school!
Quote from a participating student from last years trip:
‘We visited many different places and cities, did different activities, and had a lot of fun. The trip was amazing and very fun. Everyone enjoyed it and took lots of good memories with them. The best part of our trip was getting know each other better and becoming friends!’

'Reminding everyone that math isn't just about numbers, it's about making every moment count, even if it's irrational'
Last year we organised our first official math week! Throughout the week, the students put their knowledge in use in a variety of different games and mental math competitions, battling it out in friendly challenges that improves problem solving skills. Baking and eating pie on Pi dag (showing off measuring skills during baking), perfecting the art of oragimi, while learning how to turn simple squares into different animals, and solving some fun but complex math riddles!

The IB Art Exhibition showcases the end result of the IB2 art students' art hard work and creative journey throughout the past 2 year. It is a celebration of their artistic growth, featuring a diverse range of mediums in pieces that highlight their unique styles and techniques. From painting to sculptures, each work reflects their individual exploration and expression. The students dedicate countless hours to refine their skills, and this exhibition is the perfect opportunity to share the results of their efforts with friends, family and the Eerde community.

This is the Young Entrepreneurs of Eerde, where students have a chance to experience what real life business propopals and deals look like, while receiving feedback and 'offers' based on their hard work. This is just a part of what we aim to teach our students at Eerde, not only a traditional education, but also life skills such as communication, presentation, negotiation, listening and learning.

It is a great opportunity for the whole school to engage in team building and fun activities together. In previous years we have brought activities to the school campus or taken students off to a local activity centre in the morning, returning to school for a BBQ in the afternoon.
During the BBQ we will also hand out the yearbooks, which is a great collection of precious moments of the academic year that has passed.
Details of this year’s end of your arrangements will be shared closer to the time.
