📚 Grade 4 Reading Update
The past two weeks in reading have been all about stepping into the shoes of authors and uncovering their clever tricks! We’ve been exploring how writers create realistic characters and settings that feel so real, you’d think they were right in the room with us. Using Storm Boy as our guide, students have been spotting the words and details authors use to bring stories to life—like describing what characters see, hear, and feel, or how they talk and act. We’ve also been practicing the superpower of checking in with our own understanding—pausing, thinking, and re-reading when things don’t quite make sense. It’s been a great adventure in becoming curious, confident readers who not only read the story, but get the story!
✍️ Grade 4 Writing Update
Our young writers have been hard at work crafting exciting narratives! Over the past two weeks, we’ve focused on using vivid, topic-specific vocabulary to describe settings and characters in a way that brings stories to life. Students have also been learning to use dialogue correctly—with quotation marks and punctuation—to let their characters speak! We’ve explored complex sentences using words like because and after to add detail, and we’ve tackled run-on sentences to keep our writing clear and engaging.
Over the past two weeks, our mathematicians have been exploring the real-world connections between fractions and decimals. Using number lines, games, and hands-on activities, students have learned how tenths and hundredths work—and how they show up in everyday life, like in money and measurement.
We've also been working on elapsed time, calculating start and finish times for events using timetables and real-life scenarios. Plus, we’ve been diving into metric measurement, using thermometers to read temperatures and scales to measure mass to the nearest decimal.
It’s been a busy few weeks full of practical maths, helping students see how numbers really are everywhere!
In Personal and Social Learning, we’ve been building important life skills that help us work and play better together. Students have been learning how to solve everyday problems by trying out different strategies and working as a team. We’ve also been focusing on how to have respectful conversations, where everyone feels heard and valued.
Through stories, discussions, and games, we’ve practised including others, even those we don’t usually play with, to build teamwork and kindness. We also took time to reflect on the rules we follow—both in the classroom and in our own lives—and thought about how they help us grow into thoughtful, respectful people.
Our CBL adventures have taken us deep into the world of Minecraft, where students have been busy designing and building a virtual school! Using digital algorithms and step-by-step plans, they’ve been working in teams to create structures and systems that meet the needs of their Minecraft community.
From crafting key resources to designing new landmarks, students have shown incredible creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. It’s not just about building in the game—it’s about thinking critically, planning with purpose, and learning how communities grow and thrive together.
Watch this space—we are presenting our world's in week 9 so stay tuned for our final product on the next blog post!
Wishing a very Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing dads, grandads, and father figures in our Grade 4 community! We hope your day is filled with big hugs and happy moments! 💙
