Over the past two weeks, Year 4 have dived into the world of realistic fiction—and what a creative journey it's been! In Reading, we've been enjoying Storm Boy and the Little Lunch series, using these stories to practise predicting, making connections, and spotting important messages hidden in the text. Before each lesson, we warm up with a fun Word Work session, exploring new vocabulary from the novel. In Writing, students have been busy planning their own realistic fiction stories, working on building stronger paragraphs and spicing up their writing with transition words, adverbs, and adjectives. It’s been wonderful to see their ideas and confidence grow!
Over the past two weeks, Year 4 have been busy mathematicians, diving into two exciting areas: algorithms and time. In our algorithms unit, students have been creating and following step-by-step instructions using addition and multiplication to generate number patterns. We explored how flowcharts and lists can be used to clearly communicate these instructions—and even had a go at using digital tools like Excel and calculators to model patterns and uncover the rules behind them! We also learned how symbols can represent operations in spreadsheets, helping us see how maths and technology work hand in hand.
We’ve now started our unit on time, where students are learning to estimate and tell time using both analogue and digital clocks. They've practised converting between hours and minutes, solving real-life time problems using am and pm notation, and calculating durations, end times, and total times for tasks. It’s been a great mix of logical thinking and practical problem-solving!
Bullying No Way Day – Friday 15th August
On Friday 15th August our school took part in Bullying No Way Day, a special time to reflect on the importance of kindness, respect, and standing together against bullying.
In Grade 4, students participated in a range of meaningful activities that helped them understand how we can all play a part in creating a safe and inclusive environment. One highlight was creating a class mosaic — each student contributed a piece to represent themselves, showing how we are all different but come together as one. The mosaic is now proudly displayed on our classroom windows as a symbol of unity.
We also shared empowering messages about friendship, courage, and supporting one another. It was a thoughtful and powerful day that reminded us all that everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and accepted.
Together, we say: Bullying, no way!
In CBL, Year 4's have explored how coding in Minecraft can help create fair and helpful systems for a community by focusing on food production. Students learned about allotments and discussed why people grow their own food, then designed and built their own allotments and houses in Minecraft Education. They also planned and created farms with animals, using technology to solve real-world problems. Through these activities, students discovered how growing food supports sustainable living and helps communities thrive.
What an exciting week we've had celebrating Book Week! Our Year 4 students looked fantastic in their costumes for the Book Week Parade, proudly doing a lap of honour to showcase their favourite book characters. It was wonderful to see their creativity and enthusiasm! We also took part in a landmark scavenger hunt around the school, adding some adventure and teamwork to the day.
On Tuesday 12th August, our Grade 4 students took part in an engaging incursion with Life Saving Victoria, all about staying safe around water.
Through interactive activities and discussions, students learned important lessons about swim safety, beach safety, and how to make smart choices near water. They discovered the meaning of different beach flags, what the possible dangers are and what to do in an emergency.
It was a fun and informative session that gave our students valuable skills to help keep themselves and others safe — especially as we look ahead to the warmer months.
A big thank you to Life Saving Victoria for helping us become safer and more confident around water!
On Friday 15th August, some of our grade 4 students shared what we've been learning in our Reading and Writing Poetry Unit for the first 3 weeks of term at our school assembly. A few students also shared their free verse poems that they had proudly worked on. Everyone spoke really confidently and clearly, and should be so proud of their efforts! 😇
