In Numeracy, students have been working incredibly hard to develop their addition skills using a range of strategies, including compensation, split, jump, and the algorithm method—with and without regrouping. They’ve been confidently using their whiteboards to show their thinking and actively participating during whole-class discussions to explain their understanding. Recently, we’ve also been learning about chance. Our learning intention was to identify events where one will not be affected by the occurrence of the other. Students have been learning to identify independent and dependent events and explain whether one event impacts another. It's been great to see their progress!
This week in Reading, we focused on the important skill of identifying key words and information in texts to form detailed summaries. Our Learning Intention was: WALT identify key words and information in texts to form detailed summaries. Students were guided by Success Criteria, which encouraged them to carefully read, pick out important facts, and use those facts to write clear and detailed summaries.
Through a range of engaging texts, both fiction and nonfiction. Students practiced highlighting key ideas, discussing main points with peers, and organising their thoughts into written summaries. This skill not only helps with comprehension but also supports students in becoming more independent and reflective readers.
We are proud of how students have developed their summarising strategies and can now confidently identify what really matters in a text. These skills are essential across all areas of learning!
In Writing this week, our focus has been on applying our understanding of informative writing. We explored the features of a news article, learning how to plan and structure information effectively.
Our Learning Intentions included:
WALT to analyse a visual prompt to create an engaging narrative
WALT to use our knowledge of informative texts to plan and write a news article
Using our Writer’s Notebook, students brainstormed ideas, identified suitable text types, and practised writing with descriptive language. In our news article sessions, students researched, planned, and used topic sentences and technical vocabulary to inform readers.
By revising and editing their work, students improved their clarity and creativity. It’s been fantastic to see students growing as writers, showing strong planning and writing skills across different genres!
Over the past three weeks in CBL, students have been exploring key aspects of Australia’s history, focusing on migration, colonisation, and significant figures in Victoria’s colonies. We began by learning about different groups who migrated to Australia and the reasons behind their journey. Students then explored colonisation, including what colonies are, why colonisation occurred, and how Australia changed after Federation. Finally, we examined key individuals who shaped early Australian society and their lasting impact. Through map comparisons, discussions, and research tasks, students have developed a deeper understanding of how Australia’s past influences its present identity.
In CBL, we explored life in Colonial Victoria. Students learned about daily routines, school, and chores from 150 years ago. They wrote diary entries as if they were colonial children, describing their day. To finish, they stained their pages with coffee to make them look old! Such a fun, hands-on experience!
This week in Year 4 Sport, we had an awesome time learning how to play volleyball! We practised using different techniques like the underarm serve, the volley, and the dig. It was tricky at first, but we showed great teamwork and gave it our best shot.
Everyone encouraged each other and had a go, even when it was challenging. We focused on moving our feet, keeping our eyes on the ball, and using soft hands when passing.
Well done, Year 4s – your positive attitude and sportsmanship were fantastic. We can’t wait to keep building our skills next week!
It’s the end of Semester One, and both students and teachers have been busy completing and conducting assessments. From reading and writing tasks to maths and inquiry projects, everyone has been working hard. These assessments help us celebrate growth and plan for future learning in the second half of the year.
🧣 Winter Is Here – Stay Warm and Stay Well! ❄️
Brrr! The chilly weather has arrived, and winter is well and truly here. As the mornings get colder, it’s important to rug up in warm clothes—think jumpers, jackets, beanies, and gloves! Staying warm helps us stay comfortable and focused for learning.
A friendly reminder: If you're feeling unwell—whether it's a sniffly nose, sore throat, or a cough—please stay home and rest. This helps you recover more quickly and keeps others safe and healthy too.
Let’s look after ourselves and each other this winter. A warm drink, a good book, and plenty of rest can go a long way!
