Sovereign Hill Excursion
Our Year 5 students had an exciting trip to Sovereign Hill as part of our Challenge Based Learning focus on Community. Stepping back into the 1850s, students explored life on the goldfields and experienced what it was like to live during the Australian Gold Rush.
Highlights of the day included wandering through the historic streets, watching demonstrations, and trying gold panning—where many students were thrilled to find real gold! Through these experiences, students learned about the challenges faced by miners and how communities formed and changed during this time.
It was fantastic to see students so engaged, asking questions and making connections to their learning in class. A big thank you to our staff and helpers for making the day such a success!

Over the past two weeks, Year 5 students explored The Silver Donkey using a range of comprehension strategies. They used mood to make inferences, helping them understand characters more deeply, and identified key themes such as kindness, courage, and hope.
As we finished the novel, students reflected on the lessons in the story and how the ending reinforced these ideas. It has been great to see students thinking deeply and sharing their understanding as confident readers.

Over the past two weeks, Year 5 students have been putting the finishing touches on their historical narratives. They focused on improving their writing by rereading aloud to check for flow, rhythm, and correct punctuation, helping their work sound more like a published piece.

Students also took part in a gallery walk, where they shared their writing and provided thoughtful feedback to their peers. It has been fantastic to see students take pride in their work, reflect on their progress, and celebrate each other’s writing achievements.

Over the past two weeks, Year 5 students have been building their understanding of division and number relationships. They explored how to solve division problems with remainders and began representing these as fractions and decimals to deepen their understanding.
Students also practised using multiplication and division facts to find unknown numbers in equations, strengthening their ability to recognise number patterns and check their answers. It has been great to see students growing in confidence and applying different strategies to solve problems.
