Weeks 6-8

READING

In Reading, we continued studying The Silver Donkey, focusing on inferring characters’ feelings, analysing their relationships, and understanding how events impact them. We also explored how to identify themes using Alfred’s War, learning to summarise key events and explain the deeper message of a story.

Students practised visualising scenes, analysing figurative language, and responding to texts using evidence. We also completed NAPLAN reading preparation and assessment tasks to build confidence with online texts.

WRITING

In Writing, we focused on preparing for NAPLAN, building confidence with typing, punctuation, and editing skills. Students also developed their use of figurative language, including similes and metaphors, to make their writing more descriptive and engaging. We practised improving sentences by adding detail and imagery, as well as editing our work to ensure it is clear and accurate. 

Numeracy

In Maths, we focused on multiplication and division strategies, including using the area model, factor pairs, arrays, and short division. Students explored how multiplication and division are connected (inverse operations) and practised solving problems, including those with remainders. We also completed NAPLAN maths preparation and assessments to build confidence and accuracy. 

CBL

In Challenge Based Learning, we explored the Australian Gold Rush, researching topics such as migration, life on the goldfields, and the Eureka Stockade. Students worked collaboratively to investigate different perspectives, present their findings, and provide feedback. We then began creating a “One Place, Many Stories” time capsule, showcasing life during key events in Australia’s history. 

Personal and Social learning

In Personal & Social Learning, we focused on respect, inclusion, and making positive choices. Students explored how their actions can create a chain reaction, practised responding to real-life situations, and used role play to develop respectful and inclusive behaviours. These lessons helped students build stronger relationships and problem-solving skills.
