Youth and Family
In this unit, students explore the social category of youth and the way it is constructed as a social experience in different cultural and historical contexts. They examine how the experience of being young is shaped by various social factors including class, gender, ethnicity and location.
Students then investigate the institution of the family, how it has changed over time, and how it varies across cultures. They consider different definitions of family and the impact of social change on family life and roles in contemporary Australian society.
Social Rules- Breaking the Rules
In this unit, students explore the concepts of deviance and crime. They examine how social norms are created, enforced and challenged, and how definitions of deviant behaviour can change over time and between cultures.
Students investigate a range of contemporary issues and case studies that highlight the consequences for individuals and society when norms are broken. They also analyse how media, power structures and public perceptions influence societal responses to deviance
