Student dance resource developed by The Arts Unit
Years 7 to 10
Students will develop individual movement sequences based on set criteria related to the intent.
You will:
select and refine movement to communicate an idea
link movements to create a sequence
explore, discuss, reflect, analyse and refine movement sequence.
Before you begin you will need:
a clear space to dance safely
a device to listen to the music and watch the performance
pen, paper and post-it notes
access to software such as Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides to record your answers.
View 'Sunny in the Park' from the Stattsballett Berlin for inspiration for the next task.
SUNNY IN THE PARK | Staatsballett Berlin
Duration: 04:00Decide on an opening shape selected from the 3 you created in lesson 3.
Move using a combination of your gesture and the travelling sequence you have created from lesson 1.
Close the phrase with another selected shape from your three.
Play with this basic model and increase its complexity by including any of the suggested ideas below:
taking weight on various parts of the feet
adding arms/leg gestures
transferring weight to other body parts
add turns, jumps, holds and folds
travelling in different directions
varying the timing - slow down, speed up, stretch out.
The movement phrases should become seamless, rich and personal. Not a collection of known dance movements, but a creative interpretation of the words you started with.
Create a phrase of maximum 32 counts and record your movement and upload to your learning journal.
Tips:
don't worry about what you look like
transitions (the space between movements) should be seamless
find some music to play that inspires you to move (Nils Frahm, Olafur Arnalds or something ambient - not pop songs)
keep refining until you are happy and you can repeat it and be able to teach another dancer your section.
In your learning journal record how many counts you used and your thoughts when developing the phrase.
Draw the pathway and record this in your learning journal.
Reflect on the following questions:
Was it hard/easy and why?
Does it reflect the words you chose?
Do you think it is personal movement?
