Student dance resource developed by The Arts Unit
Years 7 to 10 dance
Students will complete a series of creative tasks to develop their own movement using a poem as a stimulus.
You will:
explore the elements of space, time and dynamics in relation to a stimulus
select and refine movement to communicate an idea
link movements to create a sequence
explore, discuss, reflect, analyse and refine movement sequences
manipulate movement using the elements of dance to create sequences and dances
Before you begin you will need:
a clear space to dance safely
a device to listen to the music and watch the performance
pen, paper and post-it notes
access to software such as Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides to record your answers.
Select a poem of your choosing that inspires you to create movement.
Here are a few poetry sources to get you started:
Select 3 words that inspire you. These words will become your stimulus for movement.
Write your words in your learning journal.
Create a brainstorm of feelings, images, sounds or other written words that are associated with these 3 words your selected from the poem.
Step 1
Create an interesting shape for each of your 3 chosen words.
Photograph these shapes and record them in your learning journal.
Step 2
Select your favourite word shape and vary the shape by changing the level.
original standing
low to the floor
on the floor
Photograph these images and record them in your learning journal.
Step 3
Develop a gesture that moves the shape but you remain in one spot (for example: movement of the hand and/or head to show an idea or feeling).
Use as many parts of the body as you need to develop an interesting flow without travelling.
Review the Contemporary choreography - Creative accumulation video presented by Lexy in Lesson 1 as inspiration.
Record the movement and upload it to your learning journal.
Step 4
Select your third word shape.
Create a phrase of movement (8-16 counts).
Start in your third shape and experiment with different parts of the body leading with an emphasis on bending, stretching and twisting. You can now move off the spot. Change levels and finish in the original third shape.
Draw a diagram of your pathway and record your movement in your learning journal.
Rehearse the words and movements that you have created, record these and upload to your learning journal. Say the words you have chosen as you perform them.
