Collaborate, choreograph and perform a dance work that uses a poem as a stimulus. Students will also document their process in a learning journal.
This assessment will be in 3 parts:
performance - students will be assessed on their dance technique and performance quality in the performance of their work
composition - students will be assessed on their use of the compositional tools to create a dance work
learning journal - students will be assessed on their critical and reflective writing of their own dance work.
Present a dance work devised through problem-solving tasks and manipulation of the elements of dance. You will explore, devise, select, refine and structure movement in response to a poem.
You will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the compositional process through performance, oral and written tasks. Throughout this unit, you will be given individual and group choreographic tasks to construct the dance work.
Students will be assessed on evidence of their abilities to:
Performance
control non-locomotor and locomotor combinations when performing extended sequences
manipulate the elements of space, time and dynamics to communicate an idea in performance
apply the elements of space, time and dynamics to personalise dance movement
perform dances with increasing confidence, communicating the intentions of the choreographer.
Composition
explore, improvise, select and refine movement based on specific ideas
manipulate movement using the elements of dance to create sequences and dances
create and refine dance phrases, sequences and compositions by exploring sequence, transition, repetition, variation and contrast.
Appreciation
Throughout the unit you will be asked to record your findings and reflect and evaluate your own choreographic process in your learning journal.
Students will be assessed on evidence of their abilities to:
describe how the body is used in space, time and dynamics in dance performance and composition .
Skilled
Sustains a skilled performance demonstrating alignment, strength, articulation, flexibility, agility, coordination and consistent application of safe dance practice.
Demonstrates a skilled understanding of the elements of dance and an in-depth knowledge of how the selection and refinement of movement affects the communication of an idea.
Structures written and oral responses with accurate detail and appropriate terminology.
Sound
Demonstrates a performance that may have some inconsistencies in alignment and/or strength and/or articulation and/or flexibility and/or agility and/or coordination and application of safe dance practice.
Demonstrates a sound understanding of the elements of dance and a competent knowledge of how the selection and refinement of movement affects the communication of an idea.
Mostly structure written and oral responses. Descriptions and explanations are sometimes inconsistent in their accuracy and use of terminology.
Limited
Presents a limited dance demonstrating a lack of control of alignment and/or strength and/or articulation and/or coordination and major inconsistencies of safe dance practice.
Presents a limited understanding of the elements of dance and a developing knowledge of how selection and refinement of movement affects the communication of an idea.
Basic information listed in written and oral responses with limited use of terminology.
Minimal
Moves with minimal awareness of alignment, strength, articulation and major inconsistencies in the application of safe dance practice.
A minimal attempt at using the elements of dance and no evidence of how the selection and refinement of movement affects the communication of an idea.
Inaccurate information in written and oral responses.
Stage 4
4.1.1 demonstrates an understanding of safe dance practice and appropriate dance technique in the performance of combinations, sequences and dances.
4.1.2 demonstrates aspects of the elements of dance in dance performance.
4.1.3 demonstrates an understanding of aspects of performance quality through the performance of locomotor and non-locomotor combinations, sequences and dances.
Stage 5
5.1.1 demonstrates an understanding of safe dance practice and appropriate dance technique with increasing skill and complexity in the performance of combinations, sequences and dances.
5.1.2 demonstrates enhanced dance technique by manipulating aspects of the elements of dance.
5.1.3 demonstrates an understanding and application of aspects of performance quality and interpretation through performance.
Stage 4
4.2.1 describes dance performances through the elements of dance.
4.2.2 identifies that dance works of art express ideas.
Stage 5
5.2.1 explores the elements of dance as the basis of the communication of ideas.
5.2.2 composes and structures dance movement that communicates an idea.
Stage 4
