Good evening ladies and gentlemen. My name is Talia Sigsworth and I'm a proud Nigeria woman and my name is alia hamona and I'm a proud of Reggie and Camilla Royale. We would like to acknowledge the Gadigal people who are the traditional custodians of this land we would also like to pay our respects to elder's past present and future of the eora nation and extend that respect to all Aboriginal people present. Ladies and gentlemen please stand for the national anthem.

Essential information for Acknowledgement of Country

  • is usually shared as a statement or speech anytime a group of people are gathered on Country. For example, at the beginning of class, at assembly and any other school meetings or events.

  • is a way to raise awareness that the group is gathered on Aboriginal land

  • demonstrates respect for the Aboriginal custodians of the land and elders past and present

  • can be delivered by Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal people

  • does not have to follow the wording of the two basic examples below - you can create your own.

Examples

Look at these two basic examples. Have you heard either of them before?

Example 1:

  • I would like to pay my respect and acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which this meeting takes place, and also pay respect to Elders both past and present.

Example 2 – can be used if the name of the traditional custodians is known:

  • I would like to Acknowledge the ________ people who are the traditional custodians of this land. I would also like to pay respect to Elders both past and present of the ______ nation and extend that respect to other Aboriginal people present.

What is Welcome to Country?

A Welcome to Country

  • occurs at the beginning of a formal event.

  • may include singing, dancing, smoking ceremonies or a speech

  • is delivered by Traditional Owners, or Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people who have been given permission from Traditional Owners was traditionally given when Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people traveled.
