A Gantt chart, commonly used in project management, is one of the most popular and useful ways of showing activities (tasks or events) displayed against time. On the left of the chart is a list of the activities and along the top is a suitable time scale. Each activity is represented by a bar; the position and length of the bar reflect the start date, duration and end date of the activity. This allows you to see at a glance:
What the various activities are
When each activity begins and ends
How long each activity is scheduled to last
Where activities overlap with other activities, and by how much
The start and end date of the whole project
The Gantt chart allows you to see at a glance where you are up to and where you should be. For further details on the specific activities, you can refer to your production log and construction processes.
Every project has time limitations. The BBQ project is due at the end of week 5 term 2, which means you have a limited number of lessons to complete. You have 7 lessons per fortnight and roughly 5 fortnights per Term. 7 x 5 = 35 lessons.
Keep in mind that there will be disruptions throughout the Term due to school carnivals and other whole-school events, which will reduce your time in the classroom. You must also consider that not every lesson will be practical, and you will require classroom time to complete your work report and other work. On average, we will be doing one theory lesson a fortnight.
So, mathematically for this project, we have:
13 weeks of lesson time = approx 7 (lessons) x 6 (fortnight for project) = 42 lessons.
We then take away 12 lessons of theory and we are left with 30 lessons.
Each lesson is 60 minutes, however, we need time to get in and pack up. Considering that, we will have about 45 minutes of practical, 6 times a fortnight for 6 fortnights.
Overall we will have a maximum of 27 hours to finish the project. I believe that it will take about 25 hours to complete.
In other words, we have time to complete the project, but no time to waste.
